From engaging in Stirling University’s student life to mountain biking in the Munros of the Scottish highlands, I find myself continually surprised by the exhilarating ‘firsts’ and the many adventures inherent in study abroad. I gained a feeling of new-found independence during my very first year of college with the First-Year Study Abroad Experience—and I couldn’t have dreamed of another way of beginning the journey.
As a FYSAE student, I audition and performed alongside Stirling University’s Drama Society in a production of The Admirable Crichton, a stage play by J.M. Barrie. I played Miss Fisher, a lady’s maid, working with my friend and fellow FYSAE participant Alana Crater ’15, who played the leading role of Lady Mary. All 18 cast members were expected to assume British accents. Scots and Americans alike, we welcomed the challenge and grew closer to one another through our laughable slip-ups and our progress. They play also gave us opportunities to make discoveries about British history, culture and controversy.
