• LONS ANRS 199S Enchanted City: Religious Experience in Secular London 

  • We tend to think of cities like London as exemplary sites of Western philosophical and political traditions of secularism; these traditions have insisted on the separation between state and religion and the allocation of spiritual experience and practice in the private domain. In reality, however, life in London entails, for many of its citizens, a constant – and sometimes tense – public negotiation of secular citizenship with deeply embedded and heavily invested religious affiliations. Through an overview of religious experience in London, this course interrogates the ways in which spiritual experience impacts the urban landscape, conversations on policy, the evolving life of communities and understandings of identity. Besides engaging with World Religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and so on) the course offers the opportunity for a wider exploration of spirituality, including involvement in magical cults.

• LONS ARDP 190 Contemporary Photography Practice 

  • The course aims to give students a basic introduction to photography practice and theory, particularly those practices and theories developed in an age or digital photography. They will learn how they can use their own equipment to its full potential by exploring photographic culture, camera technique, post production and creative application. Gallery visits, seminars, walkabouts, one to one tuition and sketchbook work will also be used to help students contextualize their own experiences of London through the medium of (digital) photography.

• LONS ARUK 110 Introduction to British Art 

  • This course is designed to provide opportunities for the student to learn of the development and significance of painting in Britain. It introduces the student to various genres such as portraiture, landscape and narrative painting. The course also involves an examination of how artists were affected and influenced by industrialization and technological developments that transformed the social, political and economic conditions of 19th Century Britain.Full advantage will be taken of the rich public art collections in London and will also include visits to key buildings studied in class. Our sessions will consist of lectures, seminars and students' presentations in class or during gallery visits.

• LONS BUUK 390S Marketing in the UK Environment

  • This course introduces students to the importance of marketing as a philosophy of business, and to the tools of marketing to provide solutions to business problems. Examples will be drawn from the United Kingdom and the Single European Market in particular.

    The course starts with an overview of marketing as a concept and its development. It then deals with the marketing environment, the concept of a product and the product life cycle and pricing in the market mix.

    Marketing research is related to consumer behavior, communications and promotional activities. Discussion of distribution issues leads to a consideration of the factors affecting choice of distribution channels. The importance of a structured approach to new product development is explored through consideration of sources of new product ideas, development and testing and market testing.

• LONS DTPC 181S Play Critique

  • The Play Critique course is centered on going to the theatre, which makes it different from other academic courses you may have taken. Theatre is a live art form: to experience its richness and diversity, as provided by this course, is a once-in-a-lifetime luxury.

    By the end of the course, you will know all about the artistic, financial and professional structures that shape the theatre in Britain, as well as have an understanding of British society and culture in general.

    Throughout the semester, you will attend ten or eleven theatre productions covering as wide a range of the London theatres as possible. Complementing these visits will be a series of lectures that combine historical and cultural backgrounds with information about the practical aspects of theatre, such as direction and stage design. Whenever possible, guest speakers are invited.

    You will also participate in a weekly seminar discussion about each of the theatre productions attended. This will teach you to consider your role as a member of the audience, to help you to develop a constructive critical approach and give you the opportunity to test out your ideas in debate. There is a supplemental fee of $250 for this course for the cost of theatre tickets.

• LONS DTSH 180S Introduction to Shakespeare in Text and Performance

  • This course provides students with a means of approaching Shakespeare focusing on the themes and ideas which permeated his dramatic art. Shakespeare's artistic development is explored with special emphasis placed on the dynamic relationship of the plays to 20th century society and the individual.

    Although this is an introductory course, it is not a survey course. It is a detailed study of six representative texts which are placed in both a modern and Elizabethan social and theatrical context. Wide use is made of available recordings, films and stage productions.

• LONS EEWL 107 Writing London 

  • Let the best writers about London, past and present, help you with your own essay writing. You will even get to meet some of them! In this course students learn about the capital through the essays and journalism of a variety of exciting authors, as well as fine-tuning their own writing in a friendly and productive workshop environment. Students will produce short non-fiction pieces each week, receiving close attention and feedback on the technical and stylistic aspects of their work. This course will benefit students from all majors to perfect their written communication, providing valuable development of the skills necessary for both successful academic writing and their future careers.

• LONS HIEC 273S The Rise and Fall of the British Empire and the Emergence of the Commonwealth, c. 1800-1965

  • The course will describe and analyze the growth and development of the British Empire from the loss of the American colonies to its late-Victorian high noon and will end with the post-Second World war era of a rapid but sometimes bitterly contested process of decolonisation, resulting in the emergence of the modern multi-ethnic Commonwealth of fifty four states. Each class will include a lecture by the tutor, documentary film extracts, handouts of primary documentary material, and structured student-based seminar discussion of the issues raised.

• LONS HIRP 350S Developing Economies: Social, Political, and Economic Change

  • This course will focus upon the comparative political economy of development. It will examine the emergence of a group of countries-most notably the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China)- which can best be described as forming part of the semi-periphery of the global economy. Taken together their development as economic and political powers would constitute a major transformation of the contemporary world: a shift from west to east in standard geographical parlance. It will examine the formation and structure of power relations and the distribution of life-chances within these states and consider the geo-political and regional implications of the emergence of these new powers. It will be based on lectures, student presentations and group discussion.

• LONS LISG 320S Sex, Gender and the City

  • Contemporary London is a vibrant world city with a range of overlapping and divergent subcultures. Like all cities, it has its own erotics and its own sexual spatial politics. From the swinging 60s to the present, this course examines contemporary literary London through the lens of sexuality, teasing out how different representations of the city and its varied people and exploring a range of topics in contemporary gender and sexuality studies. Among the themes we’ll consider are: the impact of feminism and 1960s sexual liberation; the impact of AIDS and the politics of sexuality in the 1980s; the ways ethnic communities are challenged by shifting notions of sex and gender; the crisis of masculinity in the 1990s. Authors we study include Edna O’Brien, Neil Bartlett, Sarah Waters, Hanif Kureishi and Martin Amis. We’ll supplement our reading by viewing films (e.g. Antonioni’s Blow Up and Kureishi’s My Beautiful Launderette) and we’ll visit London’s Tate Modern, and consider gender and sexuality as it figures in contemporary urban British art (for instance, the work of Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry)

• LONS SOSL 384S Britain and Slavery, 1562-1865

  • This course examines the place that slavery played in Britain’s past and its legacy today. In the eighteenth century, Britain prided itself on the liberty enjoyed by its people, yet it was the largest participant in the Atlantic slave trade, and grew rich on the wealth created by ports such as London, Bristol and Liverpool. In the same period some 10 to 15,000 black people lived in English ports and their presence has only recently been properly acknowledged. In the nineteenth century, however, Britain perceived itself as in the forefront of the global battle to end the slave trade and slavery itself. This pioneering campaign contributed to a more positive sense of British national identity. Yet Britain continued to depend on the importation of slave-grown produce and even began to ship hundreds of thousands of Indians as virtual slaves to many parts of the world. The ambivalent legacy of Britain’s past involvement with slavery remains important to Britain’s multi-cultural identity and its global role today.
