A city of about 300,000 located in the Arusha region (population 1.3 million) of Northern Tanzania, Arusha typifies what modern Africa is all about. Its international relevance is heralded by the fact that it is known as the Geneva of Africa, as it has played host to the signing of numerous peace treaties and agreements. The city is also host to the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Situated in close proximity to some of the most famous landscapes in Africa, Arusha lies below Mount Meru, where it has its own national park. Also nearby are the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Pleasant weather, lovely natural environs, and a lively social scene make this one of Tanzania's most visited cities.
