One fifth of Andalucía is protected due to its ecological importance and diversity. In addition to natural and national parks, there are eight UNESCO-declared biospheres in this autonomous region including the Sierra Nevada National Park in Granada. Current politics, both local and national, are charged with controversial debates on issues such as coastal preservation, water management and drought prevention, building permits in forested areas and protection of endangered species. And Spain is among the world's leaders in renewable energy technologies and production.

Arcadia University classes are taught by experienced University of Granada faculty members and researchers, all of whom hold PhDs and are experts in their specific fields of physics, biology, ecology, political science, and other related disciplines. The Environmental Studies Program at the UGR is an interdisciplinary, nondepartmental major that draws upon faculty members from many diverse departments. Students at all levels of Spanish language study may enroll in one or more of these courses. Further course information may be found by choosing your level of Spanish and linking to the course list.

GRAN ESRE 370 Renewable Energy: Wind, Solar, Wave

This course, taught in English, provides an overview of renewable energy concepts. The course content is grounded in theory and applied to the real-world. This course explores the main factors associated to the energy systems, and the technologies and policies that could be adopted to create more sustainable energy systems. Visits to solar plants and wind farms will be included in this course. Students will understand the physical and technological principles of energy supply systems based on fossil, nuclear and renewable sources, and of efficient energy use in buildings, industry and transport. They will recognize the main factors that determine the economic viability of energy generation, energy conservation and energy efficiency improvement measures. The course will discuss the sustainability problems associated with energy use and how they might be resolved by technological and social measures. All students will be able to perform simple energy-related calculations. Background in energy physics or engineering or environmental science desirable.

GRAN ESMC 360 Atmospheric Processes and Climate Change

This course, taught in English, includes sections on: (I) Physical Meteorology: structure, composition, and physical laws governing radiation, state, thermodynamics, stability, and condensation; (II) Atmospheric Dynamics: the equation of fluid motion, applied to synoptic and global scales; and (III) Climatology: climate dynamics, climate change, and climate regimes of Earth. Students will learn basic concepts of Physical Meteorology, Atmospheric Dynamics, and Climate and Climatic Change.

GRAN ESEA 350 Ecosystems of Andalucia

The course, taught in English, presents the major terrestrial ecosystems present in Andalucía and examines their structure, organization and functioning. Lectures in classrooms are complemented with field visits to the main representatives of these ecosystems. As the region encompasses a good representation of the most common habitats of Mediterranean-type ecosystems, the course provides an introduction to Mediterranean Ecology. The course is intended for those with previous knowledge in biological sciences or environmental sciences.

GRAN ESSM 340 Sustainability in the Mediterranean

This course, taught in English, provides students the basics of local self-sustainable development according to the Mediterranean context in which they are involved for one year. Students will also develop a holistic knowledge of the Mediterranean territories in order to evaluate and interpret the processes, the traditions and the innovations that are influencing sustainability in the Mediterranean region. No prerequisites.

GRAN ESEP 330 Environmental Politics of the European Union

This course is designed to introduce students to Environmental Politics of the European Union and to Community environmental legislation, taking into account the different national interests of EU Member States. The EU decision making process in the field of environmental protection is compared with the US decision making process. No prerequisites.
