Arcadia Core Course

Students in Istanbul take Arcadia's unique 4-credit core course, Istanbul: City of Contrast and Coexistence. This program immerses you in the spectacular city of Istanbul, absorbing the rich mix of cultures, ethnicities, religions and peoples found in the city and in Turkey itself.

Core Course (required) - KDAH CCCO 350 - Istanbul: City of Contrasts and Coexistence
- The city’s physical location as the gateway between East and West carries a unique historical and cultural importance, and guarantees the city’s global importance in Turkey, the region, and indeed the world. Students will be able to witness and engage in a dynamic city that is undergoing dramatic social, economic, and physical change. The core course offers a hands-on experience to all students and includes, as an integral part of the core course, two extended Field Studies experiences (3-4 four days) to Ephesus and Cappadocia.
  
  Ephesus, steeped in history as a powerful and strategic city in Ancient Greek and Roman times and later as a Christian stronghold, is a fascinating and extraordinary place of importance today. It is famed for the Temple of Artemis (c550 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its ruins offer visitors an extraordinary glimpse into early civilization and the changing power struggles of the region and its people.
  
  Cappadocia in Central Anatolia is famed for its cultural heritage and breath-taking natural beauty, such as the magnificent rock houses and Fairy Chimneys rock formations near Göreme, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region also has a colorful history, playing key roles throughout history.

GD 343 - Advanced Photography
- This course aims to give students the ability to read and understand a photograph by thinking and discussing on it in terms of art and visual culture. Emphasis on critique in class and doing photography assignments are major components of the course. Analyzing works of essential photographers, discussions on how to critique a photograph, going to exhibitions and watching documentaries will be performed. Students will learn how to effectively produce photography visually interesting and intellectually profound while considering both form and content.
IA 221 - History of Architecture and Interior Design
- The interpretation of the 19th and early 20th century architecture with the help of various examples of the world, introducing the styles and important architects, showing the interrelations of art and architecture. The aim of this lecture is to interpret the styles of the 19th and early 20th century architecture.

Business and Economics

BA 216 - Business Law
- The broad objective of this course is to enable students to respond sensibly to the impact of law on daily life. In addition, this course aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of law and society, learn the meanings of common legal terms, locate and cite legal information, and develop an understanding of the fundamentals of Turkish Law.
BA 302 - Business Communications and Ethics
- Effective communication is an essential skill in business. As you move up the ladder of success, communication skills become even more necessary and valuable. This course will give you the opportunity to develop skills that will be useful as you climb that ladder. Individuals must be able to communicate their ideas in both written and oral modes. We aim to introduce students the fundamentals of Business Communication by focusing on verbal and nonverbal business communication skills. Introduction to Business Communication; We will start with the eight parts of the speech. We will focus on business grammar, business vocabulary, business English speaking & listening skills, resume writing, business letter writing, business meeting and reading skills, managerial / business ethics and corporate social responsibility.
EC 224 - Intermediate Macroeconomics
- To help the student grasp more sophisticated and deeper subjects of old and modern macroeconomics. This course provides expertise in the field of Keynesian, Post-Keynesian and Neoclassical macroeconomics and in the school of Rational Expectations. The students have the opportunity of clearly differentiating among various school of thoughts.
EC 332 - Industrial Economics
- The aim of the course is to understand the structure, conduct and performance of firms by studying analytical models of imperfect competition and strategic behavior among firms. The material covered also includes the applications in the area of competition policy. EC 327 - International Economics
- This course seeks to examine and discuss contemporary features of international economic relations. It aims to place these within a broader historical as well as theoretical context. It adopts a mixture of ‘political economy’ framework and a standard ‘mainstream’ often also called ‘neo-classical’ approach to the study of international economics. The course aims to develop an analysis and a deeper understanding of the the causes and consequences of international trade, motives and gains from trade, instruments of trade policy and to asses the effects of international trade. The course locates these analysis and trade policy on the welfare of an open economy. IF 321 - Monetary and Financial Economics
- The course focuses on the principles of monetary and financial economics. It is designed to give students a fuller understanding of the role of the financial services industry within the broader context of the monetary and financial system. In particular, it aims to provide a detailed understanding of the major risks that both financial institutions and their customers face, and critically analyses and evaluates ways in which these risks can be ameliorated or mitigated.

CF 401 - Everyday Life, Culture and Society
- In this course the goal is to have the students discuss the contemporary issues of the local, national, and global order and develop a conceptual knowledge about everyday life, culture, and society in which they live. Concepts, theories, and works are re-examined and re-worked through the optic of new theoretical developments, and new intellectual and social movements. Special attention will be paid to the issues and debates that concern RTC in order to prepare students to their post-graduate professional life.
CF 415 - Festival Management
- This course is designed to introduce the organizational aspect of an international film festival. The course will cover all stages of organizing a film festival within a practical framework with emphasis on the technical and organizational aspects. The aim of the course is to contribute to students’ organizational skills and professional aspirations. During the course, students will meet prominent curators, practitioners, and actors of the festival scene and learn from their knowledge and experience.
RC 201 - Film History and Theories I
- This is a survey course aiming to familiarize students with the major movements, figures, films, as well as theories from the history of cinema, from its earliest days up until WWII.
RC 223 - Editing
- The course aims at providing the students with conceptual knowledge and the techniques of visual narration. Through lectures students will learn how to create meaning by assembling scenes and sequences. Special emphasis will be given to concepts such as cinematic space and time, cinematic reality, rhythm, and continuity. Through practical experience with digital editing software students will learn to manage the order and time of each shot and the decision process to produce positive visual continuity.
RC 325 - Making Documentaries: Theory
- This course aims to teach the students the major concepts in making documentaries in various RTC mediums. History of documentary film making will be covered including the technological developments and artistic movements that have facilitated "documentary" become a distinguished form. Similarities and differences between documentary and fiction, as well as types of documentaries such as poetic, expository, observational, participatory, reflexive and performative, will be comparatively analyzed. Examples of different types of documentaries will be studied and discussed. In the second part of the course, the students will develop and complete their own documentary projects in their chosen field of RTC.
RC 433 - Experimental Film
- In this class, there will be a through an investigation of history, form, style, production methods, content and the impact of avant garde cinema. Students will be introduced to the experimental production model, with its emphasis on the artist as sole creative force – director, cinematographer, and editor – as a viable alternative to mainstream production.
RC 437 - Music Video Production
- This course offers to introduce the students to the art and business of the Music video as a pure art form and music video as a marketing device. During the classes, students will be introduced to the history of the form, its business practices, its traditions and will be required to develop a concept, write a treatment and shoot a music video as a final project.

ACL 113 - Mythology
- The major aim is to emphasize analyzing literary and cultural meaning, knowledge and values through the examination of a variety of the texts of some prominent literary genres: short fiction and poetry. The course is designed to introduce students to some key terms, trends, and ideas in the study of short stories and poems to help them develop critical skills essential to a full-appreciation of literature in universal terms.

RC 228 - Directing
- In this course the students are taught the general principles of directing and practice these principles by making their own movies. The course involves screenplay development meetings, location searching, staging and directing actors, mise-en-scene, discussions on camera settings and storyboards for certain scenes, technical and aesthetic limitations, and advice on editing and completion. Each student will go through the pre-production, production and post-production phases as a director and will learn fundamental skills and know-how. In addition, the students will be exposed to the world of directing and directors in special workshops with renowned Turkish film directors and learn the roads to directing, as well as creating one's own directorial language.
RC 240 - European Cinemas
- The aim of the course is to enhance film movements that were created and experienced in Europe and consequently influenced other countries’ filmmaking styles. This semester the course will examine contemporary developments in the German speaking countries since the demolition of the Berlin Wall, where directors with hyphenated and creolized identities produced “short, sharp” messages like Fatih Akın.
