La Famiglia: Small Family Business Development in Sicily

  • Combining classroom instruction and fieldwork, La Famiglia exposes students to family business operations and dynamics; EU, Italian and Sicilian business laws and regulations, while developing their Italian language and entrepreneurial skills.

  • La Famiglia connects students with small family agribusinesses (i.e., wineries, dairy/cheese farms, fisheries, etc.) so they may learn about, and assist with, research and development (R&D), production, e-commerce, sales, branding and marketing strategies, and financial planning.

  • This program may be best suited for students in marketing, food science, agriculture, public relations/communications, applied computer science, nutrition, engineering and other business fields (i.e., agribusiness, accounting, MIS, etc.).

  • All students will participate in a three-credit intensive Italian language course at a level commensurate with ability for the first three weeks of the program. No previous study of Italian language is required.


Assist in research and development, finance and investment plans, sales, field study and marketing strategies while developing your Italian language skills. This program is available for undergraduate and graduate students in any academic discipline.

Students will have the opportunity to enjoy excursions to Ortigia, Catania and Palermo to name a few. View the course syllabus.

Student housing will be located at the Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences.


Students will receive six semester credit hours at the undergraduate and graduate levels (3 credit hours for Italian language instruction and 3 credit hours for the small family business development course and fieldwork).

Admission Requirements

GPA Requirements: 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

You must be in good academic standing and not on disciplinary probation. You need to submit a complete application including a transcript, letter of recommendation and an advisor's form before your application will be considered.
