School Departments and Offices

The School of Education is organized into three departments: Teaching and Learning; Curriculum, Cultures and Child/Youth Studies; and Leadership for Educational Equity and Excellence; as well as the Office of School and Community Collaborations. This structure enables our faculty to effectively advise students, oversee courses, and develop innovative programs.

Department of Teaching and Learning

The Department of Teaching and Learning, comprised of seven full-time faculty, oversees more than 20 Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved teacher certification programs, including instructional, intern, and supervisory/administrative certification programs. Certification students may obtain the M.Ed. or M.A.Ed. degree by completing additional coursework apart from their required certification courses. Courses prepare graduate students, many of whom come to us with prior career experience in non-education fields, to become creative, flexible K-12 teachers and to learn the craft of teaching while completing PDE-required coursework. All certification courses have a required fieldwork component, in addition to in-class time at Arcadia, where graduate students fulfill a practical teaching experience in a K-12 classroom; commitment is approximately 10-15 hours per week in addition to in-class course time.

Department of Curriculum, Cultures and Child/Youth Studies

The Department of Curriculum, Culture and Child/Youth Studies offers both Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) degrees and oversees a variety of graduate certificate programs focusing on the development of meaningful master’s and graduate certificate programs (typically 4 or 5 courses). Our master’s programs in education prepare individuals interested in pursuing a master’s degree with certification and/or doing advanced study in curriculum and pedagogy for school-based, community, health care, museum, and business contexts. Certificates are available in areas such as curriculum studies, science education, math education, and art education; TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Reading and Literacy studies; early childhood; and citizenship studies. Our graduate programs provide a range of exciting opportunities for students pursuing certification as well as already certified teachers and those focused on teaching and learning outside of schools to enrich and expand their knowledge base.

Department of Leadership for Educational Equity and Excellence

The Department of Leadership for Educational Equity and Excellence offers M.Ed. and Ed.D. degrees in Educational Leadership. These programs facilitate the development of administrative leadership skills for currently certified teachers who wish to earn a master’s degree and/or additional levels of certification to advance toward educational leadership roles in their K-12 learning environments. Using the well-respected cohort model, this department provides intensive feedback to its graduate students, both from Arcadia professors and fellow members of their cohort teams, all of whom are practicing teachers and leaders. The programs also offer fieldwork/supervision components as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Office of School and Community Collaborations

The Office of School and Community Collaborations (OSCC) develops collaborative affiliations with local schools and community organizations, creating fieldwork experiences that benefit these partners and Arcadia students. Through ongoing connections with schools, OSCC designs a meaningful and cohesive fieldwork program that supports students’ growth. For the culminating fieldwork experience, student teaching, OSCC makes every effort to pair Arcadia students with mentor teachers whose styles and approaches will enhance our students’ teaching practice.
