Easton Road, Glenside, Pa.
The Danny Rumph Classic (www.rumphclassic.com) has become one of the best Pro Amateur basketball events in the city of Philadelphia and is the signature event for the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation. The DERII Foundation is 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. The mission of the Foundation is to save young lives by raising awareness concerning Sudden Cardiac Arrest, providing screenings for Hypertrophy Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in order to prevent sudden cardiac arrest, and to provide Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and CPR Trainings to Tri-State area recreation centers.
The tournament is held in honor of Danny Rumph. In 2005 Rumph collapsed after a pick-up game in one of the city's recreation centers due to HCM, a dangerous and often undetected form of heart disease. At the time, Rumph was the starting point guard at Western Kentucky University. Two things could have saved Danny's life: the first is if an AED was present in the gym where Danny collapsed; the second is if he had been given a proper heart screening as a young man or collegiate athlete. The Foundation’s primary objectives are to ensure the availability of both going forward.
The following NBA players will be participating in this year’s tournament: Hakim Warick and Markieff Morris (Phoenix Suns), Marcus Morris (Houston Rockets), Mareese Speights (Memphis Grizzlies), Rasual Butler (Toronto Raptors), Sean Singletary (formerly of the Phoenix Suns), Dionte Christmas (Boston Celtics), Mardy Collins (formerly of LA Clippers), and Mike Green (Utah Jazz Summer league).
