News Alert: Arcadia University Welcomes Largest-Ever First-Year Class
Move In Day, Aug. 24, 8-11 a.m.
Glenside, PA—Aug. 23, 2012—Traffic around Arcadia University in Glenside will be congested on Friday, Aug. 24, from 8 to 11 a.m. as the Class of 2016, the largest class in the 159-year history of Arcadia University, moves into residence halls on the Glenside campus.
The entering first-year class is comprised of 680 students, plus another 125 upper-level transfer students, arriving on the Arcadia campus from around the United States—from Maine to Hawaii—and around the world—from Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Korea, China, England, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
“This event is an absolute favorite of mine because it is the perfect example of what we mean when we say that we are a family,” says Arcadia University President Carl (Tobey) Oxholm III. “From the moment the new students arrive, they know we are committed to personal attention and service, and to partnership in their success. It is wonderful to be part of this community when it is alive with energy and joy, as faculty, staff and returning-students welcome the new class to our community.”
The largest majors for first-year students include Biology (many are pre-PT, PA and other pre health), along with Psychology, Business, Accounting, International Business, Art and Design, International Studies and Education.
Arcadia also welcomes a strong graduate enrollment in our Doctor of Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Genetic Counseling, International Peace and Conflict Resolution, Forensic Science, Education, Counseling Psychology, and MBA programs.
The first week is filled with a series of events around the orientation of the students to campus and the Philadelphia area. New this year as part of orientation, the orientation team is taking every new student to Center City Philadelphia on Sunday, Aug. 26, setting them out on a scavenger hunt and to fulfill their Philly experience, dinner at Reading Terminal Market and being sure they use SEPTA – either getting there or coming back that night.
On Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. Arcadia University officially opens the academic year for faculty, staff and students, with the University Convocation ceremony. Classes begin Wednesday, August 29th.
“I am looking forward to the pleasure of opening the academic year at Convocation for this historic group of new students,” said Dr. Steve O. Michael, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “These class members truly represent the academic mission of this great university as they bring a rich and diverse international tapestry to our campus.”
Immediately following the University Convocation at 5:30 p.m. there will be a campus wide picnic on Haber Green to welcome new, returning and international students to campus.
