Arcadia University to Host Philadelphia Family Pride’s Third Annual Family Matters Conference, Oct. 20 

Supported by Arcadia’s School of Education and the Graduate Program in Counseling Psychology 

Glenside, PA—September 19, 2012—Arcadia University will host Philadelphia Family Pride’s third annual Family Matters Conference for LGBT parents and prospective parents on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Grey Towers Castle. The conference is being generously supported by the School of Education and the Graduate Program in Counseling Psychology at Arcadia. Arcadia University is located at 450 S. Easton Road, Glenside, Pa. 

The conference keynote address will be given by Graciela Slesaranksy-Poe, Associate Professor in the School of Education at Arcadia University. Dr. Slesaransky-Poe is a member of the Human Rights Campaign’s Welcoming Schools program National Advisory Council and a certified Welcoming Schools trainer.

Slesaransky-Poe, will also lead a workshop for educators, who are invited to participate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will begin a conversation guided by a spirit of understanding and respect on how to create welcoming, inclusive, safe and affirming schools for gender nonconforming, transgender, and LGB students, parents, and educators. A short film “What to know? Six to 12-year- olds talk about gays and lesbians,” produced by Welcoming Schools.

“This conference continues to be an incredible opportunity to build community and share knowledge and resources with LGBTQ families, allies and educators,” said Sandra Telep, the Education Committee Chair for Philadelphia Family Pride.

More than a dozen workshops will cover three major themes: Welcoming Schools; Knowing Your Rights; and Growing Your Family.

Educators are invited to learn how to make their schools more welcoming and inclusive for children of LGBTQ parents. Act 48 credits are available.

Free, on-site child care and programming will be offered for children 3-11, while all other children are welcome to accompany their parents to any of the sessions being presented.
