Arcadia University Welcomes Visiting Cuban Scholar

Glenside, PA—November 5, 2012—Arcadia University welcomes visiting Cuban scholar Dr. Raúl Rodríguez from the University of Havana to the Glenside campus.

Dr. Rodríguez is the Deputy Director of the Center for Hemispheric and Cuban-American Studies at University of Havana and teaches the core course Cuban-American Relations: Past and Present for The College of Global Studies study abroad program in Cuba.

Arcadia University will host two events with Rodríguez on campus that concentrate on Cuba, its culture, and its politics and are open to the public.

Gallery Opening: Mitos and Realidades: Inspiraciones de la Republica de Cuba (Myths and Realities: Inspirations from the Republic of Cuba)

The opening event takes place in the Commons Gallery on Thursday, Nov. 8. It includes a reception at 7 p.m. followed by a discussion of art and culture in Cuba at 8 p.m.

The gallery opening features works by four artists who participated Arcadia’s inaugural Global Faculty Development Program at the University of Havana in Cuba, June 24-30: Scott Rawlins (Arcadia University), Abbey Ryan (Arcadia University), Bonnie Levinthal (Penn State, Abington) and Yvonne Love (Penn State, Abington). The event is open to the public.

The Cuban Missile Crisis: Fifty Years Later

The event takes place on Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Dining Complex. There is a reception at 7 p.m. in Room 106 followed by a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. in Room 107.

Panel includes moderator Dr. Ana Maria Garcia, a native Cuban and Associate Professor and Chair of the Sociology, visiting Cuban scholar Dr. Raúl Rodríguez, University of Havana, and Dr. Peter Siskind, Chair, Department of Historical and Political Studies.
