Arcadia University Appoints Lorna Stern as Vice President
GLENSIDE, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2013) – Arcadia University is pleased to announce the appointment of Lorna Stern, MALD, as Vice President and Executive Director of The College of Global Studies. Stern is a leading figure in international education with more than 22 years of experience supporting Arcadia University in its vision for innovation in global education. In her previous role as Associate Vice President of Arcadia University and Director of Strategic Development at The College of Global Studies, she served at the forefront of the growth and development of the field of international education.
“Today marks a celebration of an extraordinary leader who has dedicated her career to global education,” Dr. Nicolette DeVille Christensen, President of Arcadia University, said in an announcement to the Arcadia community on Oct. 25. “It is an honor for me to announce the appointment of Lorna Stern as the next Vice President of The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University. This appointment represents a moment of significant import in the long history of international initiatives at Arcadia. The breadth and depth of Stern's understanding of the issues affecting students and institutions represent a shared asset to the field and to Arcadia University. We look forward to the continued successes and innovations of The College of Global Studies under Stern’s leadership.”
Stern began her career with Arcadia in 1990, serving in numerous roles in The College of Global Studies, such as Deputy Director, Special Advisor, Director of Student Services and Director of Marketing and Communications, Director of Institutional Relations, and Associate Vice President and Director of Strategic Development. During her decades of leadership, she has played an instrumental role in the significant growth of The College of Global Studies.
Furthering Arcadia’s mission of global understanding, Stern has served on several national boards in the field, has delivered countless presentations throughout the world of international education, and is one of the most well-known experts in the field today. She also serves on the board of Overseas Council and as an Advisor to Language Corps, an overseas training program for ESL teachers. She is a member of NAFSA: The Association of International Educators and AIEA, and a contributor to the Forum on Education Abroad.
“I am delighted and honored to accept this responsibility, and I’m looking forward to leading The College into its next phase of growth,” said Stern. “The higher education landscape is changing rapidly in response to increasing pressures around the cost of education, diminishing resources, and a decline in student populations seeking a traditional undergraduate education. We must grapple with these realities while providing a diverse group of students with the global learning opportunities that stimulate and challenge their world views, broaden their notions of where they may work and contribute, and provide a context where learners can assume greater responsibility for their lives and choices. As always, The College seeks to serve both students and the institutions they represent with a deep appreciation for the trust that is placed in us. I am excited to continue working with like-minded colleagues and partners both here and abroad in this new role."
Born in South Africa and raised in Great Britain, Stern brings a unique international perspective to The College of Global Studies. She holds an undergraduate degree in international relations with an emphasis on African affairs from Wells College, N.Y., and she earned a master’s degree in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, with a disciplinary focus on international law and the Middle East. Stern was a Rotary Scholar at the University of Cape Town, where she explored issues of comparative African government and law.
