Arcadia University and University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Announce New Academic Partnership

GLENSIDE, Pa. (Dec. 5, 2013) – The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University is pleased to announce a new academic partnership with the prestigious University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in South Africa. This collaboration will facilitate new study abroad opportunities for U.S. students in one of South Africa’s most culturally diverse regions.

UKZN is one of three universities in Africa rated among the top 500 universities in the world, according to the Academic Rankings of World Universities. The University’s strong reputation for academic excellence and its emphasis on diversity combine to make it one of the most progressive and innovative institutions in South Africa, and have led to wider recognition both throughout Africa and internationally.

“UKZN and its location in one of South Africa’s most diverse coastal cities provide an extraordinary academic and experiential opportunity for students,” said Lorna Stern, vice president and executive director of The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University. “Within 15 minutes travel time, students may move from a thoroughly urban and cosmopolitan city environment to small rural communities that celebrate and maintain a very traditional way of life built around long-standing customs and practices.”

UKZN offers a full range of academic disciplines, with all classes taught in English. With international partnerships in 44 countries and an undergraduate population of nearly 25,000 students, UKZN also offers a truly global academic experience.

In addition, study abroad at UKZN through Arcadia offers students unique opportunities to experience the beauty and culture of this fascinating region through experiential education and co-curricular activities. UKZN’s location in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal, bordering Mozambique and the Eastern Cape, is near two World Heritage Sites: Ukhahlamba Drakensberg National Park and iSimangaliso (St. Lucia) Wetlands Park. Of its five campuses, UKZN’s Howard campus, the one at which the majority of Arcadia study abroad students will enroll, lies in the region’s port of Durban, a commercial hub for business and tourism.

“I cannot think of another setting in South Africa that offers so much for an international student to explore as KwaZulu-Natal and the tropical city of Durban does,” said Dr. Alan Jansen, resident director for Arcadia programs in South Africa. “Students will explore its rich cultural, linguistic, religious, recreational, and environmental diversity while studying at an internationally ranked university strong on research in crucial areas like HIV-AIDS, sustainable development, food security, and maritime studies.”
