Student Veterans Organization Hosts Wills for Heroes on Nov. 5
Six days before Veterans Day, Arcadia University will host Wills for Heroes, an event that provides wills, living wills, and healthcare or financial powers of attorney to military veterans and emergency personnel, free of charge. The event, held in partnership with the Pennsylvania Bar Association and with sponsorship from Ballard Spahr LLP, will run on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Grey Towers Castle Rose and Mirror Rooms.
Wills for Heroes was initiated by Arcadia’s Student Veterans Organization (SVO), an on-campus resource network that supports students and families who access educational benefits affiliated with the military, connects veteran and non-veteran students, and integrates members into the Glenside community. In conjunction with Pennsylvania’s Wills for Heroes Foundation, SVO enlists the help of pro bono lawyers, notaries, and witnesses to facilitate the estate planning process. Last year, legal experts prepared 64 wills, offering an estimated $64,000 in legal services.
“When I came to Arcadia, I noticed that there was a population of veterans who were nontraditional students, some of whom were transitioning back and having difficulties navigating institution,” said Dr. Amy Widestrom, assistant professor of Historical and Political Studies. “We thought it would be a good idea to figure out a support system not just for veterans, but also for friends and allies.”
All Pennsylvania veterans, active and retired first responders, and their spouses/significant others are eligible for the Wills for Heroes program. Attendees must provide proof of affiliation or military service (DD Form 214). To schedule an appointment, visit pabar.org/wfh using the password “WFH.”
