The Social Studies Education Major is designed for students who are interested in teaching social studies at the 7-12 grade level. This interdisciplinary education major has students taking courses across the university including: history, sociology, political science, international studies, anthropology, economics,and psychology in order to prepare students to teach a wide-range of topics and subjects in the 7-12 setting. Upon completion of this degree students will have earned a Bachelors in Arts and a license to teach from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. As a student in the Social Studies Education major, you will:
See how history is presented to the general public and work alongside a mentor in a cultural institution such as the Historical Society of Pennsylvania or The National Constitution Center. You will learn how to prepare educational resources for educators and students. Discover how to leverage community resources to improve social studies instruction.
Examine the ideas, forces, events, and personalities that led to the dramatic transformation of the United States. You will address not only the historical paragons but also questions of interpretation. Explore the competing notions, definitions, and laws regarding citizenship and exclusion based upon race, gender, and class.
You will study instructional strategies and techniques for social studies, grades 7-12.

You will discuss women, gender, and American politics. Analyze the participation of women in American public and political life. From the fight for suffrage through Hillary Clinton’s nomination by the Democratic Party, you will be immersed into readings and discussions that are historical and contemporary, as well as theoretical and empirical.
