Dr. Peggy Hickman, associate professor of Education, published “Working with Young Dual Language Learners and Their Families in Early Learning Settings” with the Early Childhood Action Collective (ECAC), which examines the increasing need to support young children who are dual language learners. Dr. Hickman identifies who these young learners are, recommends the best ways to support them, and shares resources available for early learning programs. She also described the six levels of second language acquisition and how teachers can support children in the classroom at each level.

At the Delaware Valley Reading Association’s Teach to Reach conference on Nov. 18, 2017, Dr. Hickman also served as the keynote speaker and presented “Mirrors, Lenses, Frames, and Windows: Using Children’s Literature in a Diverse World.”
