Suneet P. Chauhan ’79, M.D., professor at the University of Texas Health McGovern Medical School, and Hank Brown, J.D., former U.S. Senator and Representative of Colorado, will receive honorary doctoral degrees and address graduates at Arcadia’s 2018 Commencement ceremonies. Dr. Chauhan will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science and address students at the graduate Commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 17, while Brown will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humanities and address students at the undergraduate Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 18.

Dr. Chauhan is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Texas Health McGovern Medical School, with a clinical sub-specialty in Maternal-Fetal medicine. At McGovern Medical School, he is the Principal Investigator for Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, which is comprised of 14 university-based clinical centers and a data-coordinating center. He is also an adjunct professor in the Bioengineering Department at Rice University.

Dr. Chauhan leads research aimed to improve the health care and quality of life for pregnant women and their children. He prepares leaders in women’s health to provide patient-centered, evidence-based care and trains fellows of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship, a program that facilitates clinical training in areas such as high-risk and critical care obstetrics, fetal diagnosis and therapy, sonography, and genetic counseling. He has published on estimating fetal weight, abnormalities of fetal growth, and complications during labor.

After earning his bachelor’s degree at Arcadia, Dr. Chauhan graduated from Thomas Jefferson University Medical College, served his residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and completed a fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

This past year, Brown served as interim president of Arcadia University (2017-18), where he provided leadership during a transitional year. Prior to his work at Arcadia, Brown served as president of the University of Colorado (2005-08), president of the Daniels Fund (2002-05), and president of the University of Northern Colorado (1998-2002). His tenure at the University of Colorado was marked by record growth in enrollment, donations, diversity, and the largest increase in state funding in the University’s history.

Brown represented Colorado as a member of the United States Senate from 1991 to 1997, and as a member of the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1991. In the Senate, Brown chaired both the Middle East Subcommittee and the Constitutional Law Subcommittee, authored legislation expanding NATO membership to central European nations, established the first formal accounting system for the federal government, and authored Colorado’s first wild and scenic river designation and the first water heritage area.  

Brown served in the U.S. Navy as a Forward Air Controller in Vietnam, where he earned several decorations, including the Air Medal with two Gold Stars. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Colorado, a master’s degree in law from George Washington University, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado School of Law. In 1988, he passed the exam to become a Certified Public Accountant.
