Known as a photo-realist painter Cottingham works in an area termed “New Realism” or “Photo Realism.” His art combines an interest in the American scene as particularly exemplified by signs and [façades] with a precision of execution that is an interesting variant on the long tradition of realism in American art. Cottingham’s paintings emphasize an oblique view so that most of the design is on the diagonal.
Jack Davis, chairman of the department of fine arts atBeaver, explains that “Robert Cottingham’s work, at first impresses you with its precision of detail, unique cutting, and interesting subject matter. Later, the strength and quality of his design sense convinces you that his work has deep roots in the entire tradition of art. His subject matter comes right out of the heart of our experience of the environment; and the strength and dynamic poetry of his composition establish the images in your mind.”
Robert Cottingham has had 16 one-man shows since 1968, several of which have been at the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York. He has participated in several group exhibitions in museums throughout the country and is represented in many private and public collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This particular exhibition is supported by Beaver’s department of fine arts, [and] grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Forum Committee of Beaver College.
