Hundreds of Arcadia students and alumni shuffled through Grey Towers Castle on Feb. 19 for the Internship and Career Fair, Arcadia’s largest recruiting event of the year. Representatives from more than 45 companies and organizations across various industries were in attendance to provide information about their available internships and job opportunities. Employer tables filled the Rose, Mirror, and Dining Rooms and the second floor admissions spaces.

“An event like this really opens doors of opportunity,” Darren Woo, a sophomore majoring in Computer Science, said. “I came here looking for one specific thing, but then I found three other organizations that could really help me go out into the world and build up a resume. Not only that, but do good in the world as well.”

Woo attended the Internship and Career Fair with his friend and teammate on the track & field team Tyler Rooney, a sophomore majoring in Health Administration. For Rooney, the event allowed him to think about what he wanted to get out of an internship.

“This is my first time looking at internships like this,” he said. “I’m looking for opportunities where I can interact in more professional environments, places that will let me work in a team setting. I’ve found myself getting more into the business side of health, so these things are important.”

DB Baxter, a junior Psychology major and Criminal Justice minor, also had the chance to consider what they want to get out of an internship.

“I was raised about five minutes from here in Cheltenham, so I’ve been here pretty much my entire life,” they said. “Getting outside of the area and experiencing people who were raised differently and have different viewpoints is ultimately what I’m hoping to get out of an internship.”

Aliyah Vidal, a first-year Biology major, had a summer internship during high school, but still felt it was important to attend the Internship and Career fair to see what opportunities are available to her now.

“ I kind of just jumped right in and figured I’d pick up on some new things I’m interested in,” she said. “ Coming into college, I was fortunate enough to have completed an internship, and I intend to have as many as possible through graduation. I got to speak with so many incredible organizations, so I’m excited.”

One of those organizations in attendance was Briarwood Day Camp in Furlong, Pa. Susan Garber and Mike Green, representatives from Briarwood, were on hand to speak primarily with Education majors who are interested in working with children ages 3-15 as camp counselors.

“Arcadia’s education program has a great reputation, and the university has a great reputation in general,” Garber explained. “It’s important for students to know what options they have. We are a 39-day summer program, and it’s a great experience, a great resume builder.”

Her colleague Green added: “The way that we are built is to help college kids and young adults develop skills to be leaders.  Teachers, business people, whatever it is that they end up doing. Students will learn quickly about leadership, not just with the children, but with their peers. They’ll get real experience working with people older than them in a supervisory capacity, in addition to helping our campers.”

Students interested in continuing their education were able to chat at the fair with representatives from Arcadia and other colleges and universities about the possibility.

“Sometimes students aren’t quite sure whether they want to go right into the workforce or if they want to pursue graduate studies,” Erin Kardon, director of graduate admissions at Arcadia, said. “So it’s important for us to be here to just inform students about the graduate opportunities we have here at Arcadia, and if something aligns with what they’re interested in, perhaps they’ll stay another couple of years or so.”

Students can learn about upcoming recruiting events via the Career Launchpad, where they can set their preferences to be notified about jobs, internships, and recruiting events based on their industry and interests.
