Courtney E. Knowlton ’10 was awarded the Evelyn Smith Monteith Graduate Award at Arcadia University’s 2010 Honors Convocation. After earning a double major in Elementary Education and Spanish, Knowlton will pursue a Master of Education at Arcadia, specializing in ESL (English as a Second Language) and Reading.

Knowlton, of Camp Hill, Pa.,  just completed her student teaching at a primary school in Canterbury, England. She also participated in the Honors Program experience in Greece in January. She studied abroad at the SUISS Creative Writing Program at the University of Edinburgh in August 2009. She participated in a “Quality Class” seminar for math teachers and attended the international Children’s Mathematical Education Conference in August 2008 in Poland. She studied abroad for a semester in 2008 at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas at the University of Granada in Spain.

The Monteith award is made to the student who shows promise of significant contribution to the field of Elementary Education by pursuing a planned course of graduate study. This award was made possible in 1988 through a gift of Alexander C. Monteith in memory of his wife, Evelyn Smith Monteith ’27.

Her commitment to scholarly contribution has been apparent in the quality of her work and her willingness to seize opportunities for intellectual inquiry well above and beyond those required of her in her academic career.”
