Dr. Doreen Loury, Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Act 101 program, addressed recent graduates of the local community at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church Scholarship Program on June 11.

Her address to the class of 2011, centered on the word legacy. “In order to develop a legacy, you’ve got to understand where your footsteps are going,” she said, asking the graduates to stand and take steps forward, back, and to each side. “Now what you just did has started the legacy of Sankofa. In your footprints, others are going to follow.” Loury explains Sankofa as a concept derived from the Akan people of West Africa that “teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward.”

Gerald Witcher Jr., who recently graduated from Carver High School of Engineering and Science, was among those honored. He was the recipient of the Arcadia University Enon Full Tuition Scholarship. Witcher will be joining the Arcadia Community in the fall as a member of the class of 2015.

Judith Dalton, Assistant Dean for Multicultural Affairs, and Dr. Steve O. Michael, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, also were in attendance.
