The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) Foundation announced that Gozde Akgumus ’15M will receive the Carolyn Mills Lovell Award at the 2016 ACMG Annual Meeting on March 10 in Tampa, Fla.

The prestigious award, presented annually to the researcher who submits the highest-rated abstract, is the first to be designed by the ACMG Foundation specifically for genetic counselors.

“Mosaic Monosomy 7: A New Syndrome with Increased Risk of Hematologic Disease” earned Akgumus—who graduated from Arcadia’s Genetic Counseling program in 2015 and works as a genetic counselor in the Division of Genomic Diagnostics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia—this year’s $1,000 prize. Characterized by early-childhood bone marrow insufficiency or failure, Mosaic Monosomy 7 is caused by a genetic predisposition that claims the lives of nearly all afflicted patients.

Akgumus will also present her research at the ACMG conference on March 11.
