Dr. Kathleen Mangione, PT, PhD, FAPTA, professor of Physical Therapy, has been selected as Arcadia University’s 2016 Professor of the Year. Generally regarded as the most prestigious recognition that an Arcadia faculty member can receive, the Professor of the Year award reflects outstanding performance and achievements in teaching, scholarly research, and university service.

Dr. Mangione, who brought her gerontology expertise to Arcadia in 1995, has focused her research and clinical career on older adult care. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware in 1985, a Master of Arts in Gerontology from New York University in 1989, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Pathokinesiology from NYU in 1994, Dr. Mangione was one of the first 14 specialists to earn Board Certification in Geriatric Physical Therapy.

Since then, she’s served as principal investigator on a multicenter trial funded by the National Institute on Aging, published geriatric studies in academic journals, and presented on older adult exercise, hip fracture, and frailty at physical therapy conferences across the country.

In addition to the Professor of the Year award, Dr. Mangione has received the Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), the Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America award, APTA’s Margaret L. Moore Award for Outstanding New Academic Faculty Member, the Joan Mills Award from the APTA Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy, and APTA’s Lucy Blair Service Award.

Dr. Mangione’s innovative teaching style, scholarship in the physical therapy field, selfless contributions to the university community, and commitment to mentoring students will be recognized at Arcadia’s Graduate Commencement ceremony on May 19.
