Inquirer Raves about John Hathaway Gallery Show
On July 27, The Philadelphia Inquirer published a rave review of the Arcadia Art Gallery exhibition “John Hathaway: Studies, Drawings, Paintings, Prints,” on display in the Commons Art Gallery and Great Room Lobby through Sept. 17.
“This is the kind of serious appreciation of a Philadelphia artist that the Woodmere Art Museum has been undertaking in recent years (Hathaway is in its collection, by the way) and should not be missed by anyone interested in the city’s art-history trajectory,” wrote art critic Edith Newhall.
Hathaway was an art professor at Arcadia from 1934 to 1971. His most well-known medium was stained glass, an example of which stands in Stiteler Auditorium. He also worked in printmaking and sketching later in his career, which can be seen in the exhibition.
