Ryan’s Solo Exhibition Hailed a “Must See”
The exhibition, “the light/the shade,” by Abigail Ryan ’03, associate professor of Visual and Performing Art, was hailed in a review by the Olean Times Herald on May 1.
“The show on St. Bonaventure University’s campus, “the light/the shade” must be seen by any appreciator of painting and poetry,” wrote critic Jaimeson Riling. “Ryan’s works are not purely representational, but reflect the natural movement of light and contain expressive gesture — a condition of her love for the medium of oil and an attempt to avoid the madness of hyper-realism.”
“The light/the shade” was on display at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts Front Gallery at St. Bonaventure University near Allegany, N.Y.
The exhibition is supported by the Dr. Norman Johnson Faculty Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences, given to dedicated faculty members to excel in their research in the humanities and social sciences. While creating “the light/the shade,” Ryan was informed by Dr. Johnson’s work on the evolution of prison architecture, monastic life, and solitary confinement. The first edition of “the light/the shade” was on view at Arcadia in 2017.
