“Spencer Finch: As Lightning on Landscape” is a can’t miss show, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer Art Critic Edith Newhall in her July 3 review. 

The exhibition, on display at the University’s Spruance Gallery until Dec. 15, showcases work of New-York based artist Finch from 1995 to 2018 that explores the tension between objective investigation and subjective perception, with an emphasis on the capacity of color and light to capture and evoke the ineffable. 

“If you haven’t yet gotten to know the work of Spencer Finch, now’s the time,” notes Newhall in the review. “I was simply captivated.”

“As Lightning on Landscape” is one of two presentations of Finch’s work currently on view in Philadelphia. As part of the “Whitman at 200” series, which is a yearlong celebration of Walt Whitman’s 200th birthday, Finch’s public project When You Look on the River and Sky can be seen on the RiverLink Ferry between Philadelphia and Camden, and uses color wheels for the public to match the colors of the sky and water.
