Arcadia Poets Symposium

It’s time for the
6th
Arcadia Poets Symposium!
poetry reading and panel discussion
to be held on
Tuesday, Oct. 15, 4 to 5:40 p.m.
Amphitheater of the Dining Services Building

“The Role of the Poet in Society” University Seminar is sponsoring this event. As part of the course, we are inviting published Arcadia poets (faculty, staff, and students) as well as spoken word artists who regularly perform in public to participate in the symposium. Participating poets will be asked to read/perform 1-2 original poems and join our discussion about the role poetry plays in the world today.

The purpose is three-fold:

  • Students will hear the variety of voices and styles and witness that poetry is thriving right here at Arcadia.
  • Students will have the opportunity to discuss process, craft, and the role of poets in society with published writers.
  • Students in the course will be assigned to write a profile on a published poet, requiring an in-person interview. The symposium will help students identify poets they would like to interview and write about. Participating in the symposium does mean you may be contacted by one or two students for an interview of no more than 30 minutes.

Of course, it’s also a chance for you to share your work and thoughts with others on campus who are interested in poetry and are writing their own. And it will be fun!

Professors (whether joining the panel or not) who normally teach at that time are welcome to bring their class along, and/or to invite their other classes to attend. Contact Ellen Murphey by Sept. 30 if you would like to be included, and note whether your students will also attend.

If you accept this invitation to join our panel, please email two poems and a brief bio no later than Monday, Oct. 2. Students will be provided these materials so that they can sample your work and generate some questions in advance.
