Dr. Katie DiSantis, associate professor of Public Health, co-authored “Long-term Results From the FRESH RCT: Sustained Reduction of Children’s Tobacco Smoke Exposure,” for the January 2020 issue in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM). The article, written with Dr. Bradley N. Collins of Temple University, was also featured in the AJPM monthly newsletter.
The piece highlighted a new method to reduce children’s tobacco smoke exposure called Family Rules for Establishing Smokefree Homes (FRESH). The study found success in FRESH counseling, and that “smokers in low-income communities demonstrate elevated challenges to success in standard smoking treatment. FRESH follow-up results suggest the high potential value of more intensive behavioral intervention for vulnerable smokers.”
Dr. DiSantis’ research has focused on behavioral aspects of the infant and child feeding, breastfeeding, maternal smoking, and portion sizes, as well as in the areas of family feeding behaviors and food environments.
