Subject Specific Databases
ACS Journals The American Chemical Society is the leading publisher of peer-reviewed research journals in the chemical and related sciences, serving scientific communities worldwide through an unparalleled commitment to quality, reliability, and innovation.
SciFinder Use the registration form to create an account for yourself using your Arcadia e-mail. The premier source for Chemistry – search journal articles from Chemical Abstracts, the CAS Registry of chemical substances, patents, and chemical reactions.
PubChem The world’s largest collection of freely accessible chemical information from the National Library of Medicine’s National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Similar to SciFinder, with more emphasis on journal articles.
ScienceDirect Scholarly articles from scientific, technical, and medical journals. A product of the major academic publisher Elsevier.
General and Related Databases
Academic Search Ultimate A large, academically multidisciplinary article database that is a very good place to start a scholarly literature search.
Wiley Online Library Wiley offers an exceptional portfolio of over 1,600 journals covering the full spectrum of the sciences and humanities, including a section devoted to chemistry (select the + sign next to Chemistry in the subject list to see subject areas).
PubMed A very large, very comprehensive database that is an excellent starting and finishing point for conducting health science literature research. It searches MEDLINE and other life science journals.
Search Engines
Google Yes, this go-to search engine is a great way to get background on a search topic and gauge how much information there is on it.
Google Scholar The next level go-to search engine that’s as familiar looking as Google and provides a useful sense of how many professional and scholarly sources there are on a topic. Links to full-text in both Arcadia and Open Access sources.
Chemistry Websites
Spectral Database for Organic Compounds SDBS “SDBS is an integrated spectral database system for organic compounds, which includes 6 different types of spectra under a directory of the compounds. The six spectra are as follows, an electron impact Mass spectrum (EI-MS), a Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), a 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum, a 13C NMR spectrum, a laser Raman spectrum, and an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum” (from website’s Introduction page).
NIST Chemistry WebBook “This site provides thermochemical, thermophysical, and ion energetics data compiled by NIST under the Standard Reference Data Program” (from website’s homepage). NIST is the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
