Landman library is a great resource for course materials. Our online materials come in a variety of formats, from ebooks to articles to films and a lot in between, and cover a wide breadth of disciplines. Any of these resources can be added to your Canvas page. Plus, they are freely available to Arcadia faculty and students!
This guide primarily focuses on using the library’s subscribed ebooks and streaming films as course materials, but there are many other resources in the library that can be used in the classroom, including databases and other digital collections. Be in touch with your librarian with any questions or acquisition needs. Your librarian can assist in locating digital versions of course materials!

If the library does not have an ebook that you need, please use our purchase request form. When requesting a purchase, please keep in mind:
- The request does not guarantee the library will purchase the book. We will do our best to meet requests, but a number of factors help determine which books we purchase, including availability as an unlimited user ebook.
- We will try our best to expedite the process–especially given the current push to move courses online–but please note that purchasing the books is not instantaneous. Depending on staff workloads, it may take a week or longer from the date of the request to when the ebook is added to our collection.

OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that are free of cost and made available without copyright or licensing restrictions limiting how they are used. They can be any type of resource, from textbooks to images to assessments or assignments. This includes books and videos in the public domain or made available for free by networks, publishers and other providers. Be in touch with your librarian for more information or assistance.
Purchase considerations for any electronic item
- Most ebooks and streaming films are available from a provider as individual purchases – typically in the form of a one-time fee for ebooks and a one-time individual rental fee or yearly subscription fee for streaming films.
- The number of users: how many people need access to the book or film at the same time?
- Type of access: does Landman own the material permanently or is it available through a subscription?
- If we don’t own the material, we will work to acquire it but may need some time to establish a license and online access for our community.
- Digital Rights Management (DRM): have the publishers implemented technological measures preventing users from undertaking certain actions (such as limitations on number views, or number of pages that can be printed or downloaded, which are typical).
- Editions: how often is a new edition released? Does which edition you are using matter?
- Digital collections (online resources and databases) are more complicated in terms of scope of content, access option, and subscription costs.
