Jacquelyn H. Barrett-Washington ‘72, ‘01H is one of our 5th annual Women Who Lead Forum honorees. She is best described as a seasoned criminal justice professional with over 30 years experience in state and local criminal justice training and operations. In 1992, Jackie Barrett ran for and was successful in becoming the first African American female in U. S. history to be elected to the Office of Sheriff. As Sheriff of Fulton County, Ga. she managed the largest jail operation in the state, a staff of 1000 civilian and sworn employees, and a budget of more than $70 million. She further made history in heading the first agency in the State of Georgia to receive the prestigious Triple Crown Award given by the National Sheriff’s Association. After her retirement from active law enforcement, Barrett-Washington immediately went into another phase of her career by working as part of the disaster relief operation in New Orleans, La. following Hurricane Katrina.
