About the Summer Reading Program by Arcadia Community Learning Center
Designed for students to become more competent and confident readers. Taught by knowledgeable and experienced instructors in their final stage of a master’s degree as a Reading Specialist K-12. Arcadia’s master’s Reading Programs are nationally accredited by International Dyslexia Association and Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI). Supervision of the program is provided by university professors who are PA certified Reading Specialists K-12.
Comprehensive Literacy Program
Instruction focuses on all literacy skills including: phonemic and word analysis; vocabulary; fluency; comprehension and writing. Instructional approaches include Wilson/Foundations materials used for word analysis skills. These skills are taught through engaging, interactive activities to improve comprehension and learning specific strategies related to deeper understanding of text. Strategies are applied in reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction materials. Thematic units at each grade level encourage excitement as children read, write and engage in projects.
Assessment
All children enrolled are assessed using informal reading and writing assessments to identify their strengths and needs in various literacy skills. Ongoing progress monitoring allows children to receive instruction targeted to their specific areas of need.
Parents
Parents are involved in the progress of their child throughout the program. Parents receive a written report to reflect the initial literacy assessment, their child’s portfolio highlighting their work from the program and a final summary report showing student’s growth. Families join a planned celebration on the final day of the program. The celebration showcases the children’s program learning experiences and projects.
Program Cost
The four-week summer session is $125.00 per child. Sibling discount: Program fee is $100 for each additional child.
