As part of Arcadia University’s participation in the Free Library’s citywide “One Film” program, the Department of Fine Arts is pleased to sponsor this screening and panel discussion. The first commercial film about a painter made by a painter, the movie tells the story of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) and his ascent from graffiti artist to superstar painter in the early 1980s and subsequent demise due to drug addiction. Basquiat was the first African-American figure to achieve such meteoric stature in the international art world. This cinematic reflection of his brief life provides a broad platform for discussing graffiti, race, class, sexuality, substance abuse, and celebrity, among other topics. Staring Jeffrey Wright in the title role, the film portrays famous characters of the day, including Basquiat’s friend and mentor Andy Warhol, memorably played by David Bowie. The film also features cameo appearances by Gary Oldman, Michael Wincott, Dennis Hopper, Claire Forlani, Courtney Love, and Benicio del Toro. Music by John Cale.
