About The MFA Residency in Scotland
The MFA Program second residency takes place in July between the first and second years of the program, and lasts for one week. The residency allows students to widen their perspectives on writing and culture, and to bond with one another over a shared experience which tightens the sense of community within the program.
Here are some of the things we do during the residency.
- Inspirational walking tours and excursions through the city, including to neighborhoods, museums, plays, castles, and events during Edinburgh’s festival season.
- Workshops and seminars with a visiting British writer which allows students to gain a new and international perspective on their own language. Past visiting writers include: Alice Thompson, Alan Warner, and Louise Welsh.
- A day trip outside the city to see some of rural Scotland.
- Plenty of free time for students to pursue their own interests.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are flights included in the cost of the program?
Since our students are based all over the world, everyone books and takes their own flights. All students get reimbursed $700 for their flight.
Is food and housing included in my tuition?
Housing in Edinburgh during the residency is covered with tuition. All required activities and meals are also covered with tuition. Students do need to bring spending money. The housing provided has kitchens, so students can cook meals if they want to.
How long is the residency? Can I extend my stay?
The residency lasts one week, Saturday to Saturday. Students may arrive early in Edinburgh or stay after the residency is over.
While Arcadia does not provide housing outside the residency dates, students are welcome to remain in Europe and continue their travels if they wish.
