Curriculum Requirements
Our curriculum consists of synchronous and asynchronous courses which will prepare students to:
- Launch successfully into a clinical leadership and or management role within a variety of organizations.
- Discover further educational pursuits in line with their passion and interests.
The curriculum consists of six 3-credit courses and students can start any semester. Most courses can be taken in any order*:
- CHS 600: Contemporary Issues
- Our participants will not only gain a profound understanding of key theories and didactic concepts but will also have the unique opportunity to interact with content experts. This engagement will allow them to apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios, collaboratively work through practical solutions, and emerge as adept healthcare professionals ready to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare delivery. Join us on this enriching journey to expand your expertise and make a meaningful impact in the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare.
- CHS 601: Financial Decision Making in Healthcare
- The purpose of the course is to introduce students to a variety of financial management topics and develop some financial management decision-making skills that can be applied in a myriad of work environments. Often using real-world data, students will learn and apply financial management concepts to healthcare settings.
- CHS 602: Healthcare Economics and Policy
- Explore economic theory and its role in the business of healthcare. Students will begin to navigate healthcare policies that affect clinical practice and its effect on the business of healthcare. Students will have the opportunity to take their knowledge and make management and leadership decisions to improve operations and outcomes for their organizations.
- CHS 603: Emotional Intelligence and Communication in Healthcare
- Emotional intelligence is often cited as the differentiating factor of success in leaders and employees and is especially critical in the healthcare environment. Students will explore their communication style and emotional intelligence level and learn to improve these critical skills. They will learn techniques to adapt their innate style to improve communication with others and within teams. By understanding and developing the students’ skills utilizing the 12 competencies of Emotional Intelligence, students will be better prepared to contribute positively to the healthcare environment in whatever role they pursue. This course will require the students to reflect on their current style and experience and participate in self-improvement exercises.
- CHS 604: Healthcare Information Management: Data Analytics
- Every day, significant amounts of data are collected within the field of healthcare. This data and information will help guide managers and leaders in healthcare in their decision-making. Students will advance their knowledge and explore opportunities within this data to manipulate it for decision-making and present it using visualization tools. Students will be prepared to utilize data and data visualization tools in their next meeting to highlight the reasons behind a decision.
- CHS 605: Strategic Planning
- “The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do” – Michael Porter. Each week, case studies from healthcare organizations will be read, analyzed, and discussed with experts so students will be able to practically talk the talk and walk the walk. Each week, while applying concepts from previous courses, students engage with experts in healthcare strategic management to look at what’s been done and what could be done in the future to solve healthcare challenges.
The curriculum consists of six 3-credit courses and students can start any semester. Most courses can be taken in any order except for CHS 600 which must be taken first and CHS 605 which must be taken last.

Healthcare Management and Leadership Certificate
The primary mission of this certificate program is to prepare the next generation of healthcare managers for the lifelong pursuit of professionalism, knowledge, innovation, stewardship, and leadership for an improved healthcare system to meet the needs of all populations.
Consistent with this goal, the program is designed to provide sufficient content, knowledge, and skills to prepare students didactically to sit for the board examination in healthcare management as an American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) fellow.
About the Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management and Leadership will prepare students to manage inefficiencies and become successful leaders in the healthcare industry.

Curriculum
The curriculum consists of six 3-credit courses. One course will focus on healthcare economics and policy which will assist students in exploring alternative payment models based on economics, policies, and past and present healthcare trends. Another course will explore accounting and finance as applicable to healthcare facilities. A course in healthcare information management will assist the student in being able to analyze and utilize data and quantitative information in decision making. Since communication and emotional intelligence is a large part of a leader’s success, there will be a course dedicated to communication and leadership. There will be a strategic planning course which will allow learners to utilize all of the concepts explored in the other courses, along with allowing them to further solve healthcare challenges in real time.
All applicants to the program must start with CHS600 Introduction to Healthcare Management and Leadership.
