Requirements for the Minor in Japanese

A total of 20 credits above the 102 level
JA 102 may not be included in the total of 20. Students entering at a level higher than 102 should consult with the Department Chair concerning their course selection for the minor.
Up to one course in English with a cultural content related to the language being studied.

Learning a second language opens up the world. When I was in Japan, at first I did not know much about English. Now, I understand two different perspectives, two ways of thinking.

One reason Japanese language classes are so popular is Arcadia’s anime club. So many students are interested in anime. When I first came here, the club had over 100 members. Another reason would be Japanese culture— people, not just students, enjoy meditation, Zen, for example. It helps purify the mind.

Japanese culture is very unique, and it has a long history. I teach a Japanese culture class too, and my students recently presented on tea ceremonies, geishas, cherry blossom viewing, festivals. No matter what time of the year it is, Japan always has some kind of festival going on.

Gain a solid understanding of Japanese culture. You will build your knowledge through bilingual readings in Japanese and English.

Introduction to Japanese Literature

Experience an introduction to Japanese literature, both in Japanese and in English, from the Meiji period to the present. You will read selections by Mori Ogai, Natsume, Soseki Natsume, Higuchi Ichiyo, Enchi Fumiko, Hirabayashi Taiko, Banana Yoshimoto, Haruki Murakami, Sakai Junko, Kakuta Mitsuyo, Otsuichi, and other authors.
