Dr. Jonathan Shandell, associate professor of Theater Arts, was one of eight finalists for the Theatre Library Association’s George Freedley Memorial Award for his recent book, The American Negro Theatre and the Long Civil Rights Era.

The American Negro Theatre and the Long Civil Rights Era provides the first in-depth study of the historic American Negro Theatre (ANT) and its lasting influence on American popular culture. Starting from a shoestring budget, the ANT grew into one of the most important companies in the history of African American theatre.

“It’s gratifying to be recognized by the Theatre Library Association for my research,” said Dr. Shandell. “I worked on this book on and off for more than a dozen years, so I’m pleased to have an indication that this work is appreciated by others in the field. The community of theater historians is a wonderfully talented and supportive group of people that I’m lucky to have as colleagues and friends.”

The George Freedley Memorial Award recognizes exemplary work in the field of live theatre or performance. Dr. Shandell’s book provides the most complete picture to date of ANT, analyzing well-known productions and groundbreaking efforts.
