Dear Arcadia Community,

Last year, the passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act established Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Arcadia University will observe this holiday, which falls this year on Sunday, June 19, by closing offices, where possible, on Monday, June 20. Offices and units essential to regular operations will remain open, and staff who are deemed essential personnel should work with their direct supervisor to take this holiday break on another day.

Juneteenth was first observed in 1865 to recognize the day the news of emancipation reached those enslaved in Galveston, Texas — two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This national holiday commemorates African American freedom and culture while placing an emphasis on education and achievement. We hope that staff members use this opportunity to learn more about the history behind the day and to reflect on our commitment to social justice. 

There are several events planned around Philadelphia and our surrounding community in celebration of Juneteenth, as well as an educational event led by the Office of Access, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. As we celebrate this holiday, let us reflect on how our anti-racism and JEDI work can honor Juneteenth’s legacy and advance our commitment to reflect the world in which we live. 

Note: Any University events previously scheduled for June 20, such as the Strategic Leadership Team Retreat, will be rescheduled. More information for those specific groups is coming soon.
