Dr. Kira Baker-Doyle, associate professor of Education, highlights how teachers are using 21st century innovation in her upcoming book, Transformative Teachers: Teacher Leadership and Learning in a Connected World, to be released in May by Harvard Education Publishing.

The book looks at the growing movements of civic-minded teachers and how they connect and organize to bring innovation into the classroom. By examining grassroots, educator-driven movements such as the EdCamp unconference movement, educational chats on Twitter, and the Maker Education movement, Dr. Baker-Doyle addresses how these educators are changing the profession through a teach, lead, learn approach.

“Many books about teachers today focus on the challenges that teachers face in their profession,” said Dr. Baker-Doyle. “Transformative Teachers takes a different tact. It highlights the roles that teachers play in improving their work and world and provides models of teacher-led educational change. In a time in which teachers are often painted in a negative light, this book reveals the truth of teachers in the 21st century: They are connected, innovative, and leading new educational movements.”

Upcoming readings
On Friday, April 14 at noon, Landman Library will host Dr. Baker-Doyle for a book talk and signing in a discussion about innovative education. Additionally, Dr. Baker-Doyle will read on May 6 at 2 p.m. at the Big Blue Marble bookstore, as a kick off to the summer book club; Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Society of Germantown; and Sept. 9 for a book launch and back-to-school celebration. A location is yet to be determined.
