On March 28, Dr. Doreen Loury spoke at Temple University’s second annual Salute to Vietnam Veterans. The Salute to Vietnam Veterans recognized Temple alumni, staff, and students who served in the Vietnam war or during the Vietnam era. Dr. Loury is a Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam era, as well as in the Air Force Reserves for eight years.

Dr. Loury has previously done work on and and for the extra challenges presented to women veterans. In the 2012 Temple University Women’s Veteran Forum, Loury presented “The Transition Blues,” which addressed the added difficulties women veterans face when returning to civilian life.

Following her presentation, on March 29, Dr. Loury spoke about her work with Black men and boys, and how that impacts Black women in Philadelphia in an interview with Octavius Blount ’15 for the City of Philadelphia’s cable TV station’s Spotlight Series, as part of Women’s History Month. Dr. Loury highlighted how Black women are taking charge on local and national levels.

As founder and chair of the Black Male Development Symposium, Dr. Loury has been committed to improving equity and inclusion in higher education, and has received several awards throughout her career for this work, including the Black History in the Making (BHIM) Legacy Award in 2019, the African American Women Veterans in Higher Education Award in 2017, and the Education Award from the Black Women’s Educational Alliance of Montgomery County in 2013. She is the first African American professor at Arcadia to be awarded the coveted Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2010, and she also received the University’s Cultural Ally Award in 2009.
