Genetic Counseling students and Program Director Dr. Kathleen Valverde volunteered at the 9th annual rideATAXIA Philly on Oct. 15 in support of the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), which funds research for Friedreich’s Ataxia in hopes of finding a cure. Students staffed the registration booth and rest stops for cyclists along the four, eight, 25, and 50 mile routes.

Arcadia’s connection to FARA stems from Genetic Counseling alumna Jennifer Farmer ’97, who serves as executive director. Altogether, rideATAXIA raised more than $300,000 for the foundation.

“I participated in rideATAXIA because I wanted to get involved with events through the Genetic Counseling program as a new student,” said Marlise Combe ’21, who also completed the 25-mile ride. “I’m always looking to be active, so riding was the natural choice for me, in addition to volunteering.”
