Rose Huber ’11, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Global Media in May, is preparing to embark on an 11-month journey spanning 11 countries with The World Race, a division of the Adventures in Missions organization. In January, she will join a 60-member group to serve communities in many ways: teaching English, working with youth groups and providing support to victims of human trafficking.

Huber feels as though experiences with Arcadia have prepared her well for the challenges that lie ahead. She has emerged from her undergraduate education with a network of supportive friends and colleagues as well as reliable skill set, which she says she’s excited to expand upon.

“The most rewarding part of my education was the places that I got to go and the people that I got to meet, both home and abroad,” she says. “I have friends and professors that I plan to stay in contact with for the rest of my life. When I am abroad for this 11-month trip, I plan on using and improving skills that I learned in my Video Production classes, specifically those taught by Alan Powell, Associate Professor of Media and Communications. I’m really looking forward to documenting my time away as well as the people and cultures that I will have the privilege to encounter.”

Traveling and experiencing different cultures has always been a priority of Huber’s. While participating in First Year Study Abroad Experience (FYSAE) in London, Huber traveled to Wales, Germany, Greece, Denmark, and Sweden. She also studied in Tanzania in the Spring of 2009 and Australia in 2010, also adding the Netherlands, Switzerland, New Zealand and Fiji to her list of countries visited. In addition, Huber participated in a Missions Trip to Nicaragua in March 2011 with a group of friends she met through Arcadia’s Christian Fellowship Club.

“I am happy with the person I have become because of those experiences [abroad],” she says. While at Arcadia, Huber  also was a part of the Honor’s Program, Phi Kappa Phi and a member of Knight Club. In the future, Huber plans to become a documentary filmmaker and create promotional videos for non-profit organizations.

Beginning in Guatemala, World Race will take Huber to Honduras, El Salvador, Ukraine, Romania, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Thailand, Cambodia and finally Malaysia. Follow Huber as she blogs and documents her experiences from each destination: rosehuber.theworldrace.org.
