Spanish Cultural Studies Major

Required Course

This is a semester-long, part-time internship appropriate to a career involving proficiency in at least one modern language and requires a minimum of 120 hours of work. You may choose to complete this course through the College of Global Studies in an internship abroad. 

Elective Course

This course examines the social, political and cultural aspects of iconic women in Spain from the Middle Ages to the present.

We will read and discuss female authors such as Santa Teresa de Avila, María de Zayas, Catalina de Erauso, Marcela de San Félix, and Soledad Puertolas and analyze film from Spanish directors Isabel Coixet and Iciar Bollain. You will examine gender roles within Spanish society and their social constructions as well as the vilification of strong women throughout history.

Elective Course

This University Seminar examines perceptions of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and their international implications. Texts include journalistic perspectives as well as autobiographical accounts and poetic responses. Spanish and international films and documentaries are screened covering topics such as women’s participation in the war and the origins of global responses to the war.

This course is a bilingual course and is taught in both Spanish and English. Readings are in both Spanish and English.

Elective Course

A view of the diverse Hispanic world as seen through representative Spanish language films from Spain and Latin America. Through critical and creative analyses, students will get a sense of some of the important features that are particularly Hispanic in nature and how they relate to universal themes.
