Arcadia Craft Ideas on a Budget
If you’re anything like me, you’re a big arts n’ crafts fan. If you’re still like me, you’re balling on a college budget. Not to fear! There are plenty of activities on and around Arcadia’s campus for beginner and experienced crafters alike.
Crochet Club – On Thursdays from 4 – 6 p.m., Arcadia’s very own Crochet Club is held at the Civic and Global Engagement house. Those who have never done the craft before or have little knowledge of it are welcome to join and learn to make their own creations! As someone whose only experience with crochet was attending club meetings, I have made myself a Granny Square, a tulip, and a small snowman. Anyone interested is welcome to join – and will be treated to snacks and tea – as well as follow the Instagram account, @arcadiacrochets.
No Sew Stuffed Animals – I have no clue how to use a sewing machine, and hand stitching takes time – but I’m still a huge fan of making my own plushies. If this sounds like you, you can easily make your own with hot glue, and stuffing the plush with scrap fabric or cotton. Bodies can be made from old socks, masks, or shirts, and if need be, thrift shops always have cheap clothing with great patterns for crafting. Button eyes can also be glued on instead of sewn. This craft is especially useful if you need a gift to give to a friend or loved one, as anything handmade is appreciated!
Dollar Store Supplies – Don’t care about quality and just want to explore and play with materials? I’ve found the dollar store a great alternative to expensive supplies that I find myself not knowing how to use. Anything from modeling clay to pipe cleaners, sketchbooks to pens, paint markers to fabrics and felt, can be found on the shelves. Near Arcadia, there are three Dollar Trees alone; one in Wyncote, one in Jenkintown, and one in Flourtown.
Simple Origami – A tried and true craft, going back to paper planes in elementary school, origami is a simple way to make lovely creations. With just paper, scissors, and a marker (optional), you can make flowers, animals, and more complex shapes. For beginners, here’s a handy list of different ideas and inspiration to help on a new origami journey.
Spruance Art Studio – Open to all students, the Spruance Art Studio is a safe haven for those interested in crafting, for school and recreational use alike. Whether you need materials for collaging, sculpting, painting, sewing, and so much more, the studio has you covered. All your teachers and peers ask is that you clean up after yourself and respect the space and the materials; no one likes crusty, uncleaned paintbrushes and paper scraps all over the floor. With that being said, let your creativity free, and have fun!
