The Seven Deadly Sins: Arcadia’s Cabaret Show, Spring ’24
Arcadia’s student-run theater club, Cabaret, continues its once-per-semester productions with an enticing theme: the seven deadly sins, or “taboo.”
The name “Cabaret” is a reference to the musical Cabaret itself, but it’s not just one show; our Cabaret is a compilation of songs from any and all musicals, as long as they fit under the production’s theme. Last semester, the theme was “romance.” I sang as Prince Eric in Her Voice, a solo dedicated to the Prince’s affection for the Little Mermaid. Another number I was in was from Mamma Mia!, called Lay All Your Love on Me. I affectionately referred to this as “ABBAret” – which continues this semester.
One such taboo ABBAret song includes Money, Money, Money, a reference to greed performed in the original musical by characters Donna, Tanya, and Rosie. Because Cabaret is a club on campus, all are welcome to audition and all who audition are welcome to join! Everyone (who wishes to be) is offered a lead and ensemble role, thus our version of Money, Money, Money includes a three-person ensemble. There is one number that is required for all to join; a full cast number that changes with the theme.
This semester, our full cast number is the Mob Song from Beauty and the Beast. These characters band together in wrath and greed, to kill the titular beast and pillage his home. I was lucky to be chosen to play Gaston, “everyone’s favorite guy” – unless, of course, Jekyll & Hyde is more your style. In that case, the song Confrontation is featured in this show as a solo song, showing the protagonist switching between the two infamous identities.
No matter what song you’re watching, it’s guaranteed to be packed full of humor, emotion, and energy. As the director of a number myself, we strive to have the most fun with our songs. Whether you’re a fanatic of musical theater, you’ve never seen a musical before, or you just want to support your friends in the cast, you will really enjoy our show!
The show is on Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Closer to that date, a ticket link will be available on the Instagram page (@arcadiacabaret), just so the board can get an expectation of the audience size; tickets are completely free. My family and friends coming to see it from NJ are excited, though not as much as I am to both perform and to see everyone there for the show! If you’re even the slightest bit interested, please drop the Instagram a follow for upcoming teaser videos and more information on the show!
On behalf of the board, directors, and actors: We hope to see you there!
