Chantel Coleman ’19, Founder of the Scarlet Steppers
I am an avid member of Knight Club and ASL Club, and I work at the IT Desk. I’m also the president and founder of the Scarlet Steppers.
Stepping is using movement to pledge allegiance to a group or community. I like to describe it as creating rhythm with your entire body. It’s like tap, except you use your whole body to make the sound, including your hands, chest, and feet– without the help of little metal plates. Stepping originated in Africa and also has some military background. Greek Life has stepping– there’s a want for Greek Life here, as well as other forms of diverse movement. Bringing this to Arcadia is different and refreshing. There isn’t a sorority, but you can step. There are now 15 people total on our roster, and our first performance is coming up on December 13 at the men’s basketball game.
Chantel is a sophomore Early Education Pre-K-4 major at Arcadia.
