Declaring a Double Major
Want to declare a double major? Now is the time to do it! Declaring a double major can be extremely exciting to do, but you’ll have to decide between declaring a second major or declaring a minor. I decided to declare a second major because coming into college I knew that I loved psychology and criminal justice. However, I wanted to fully experience both majors separately so I decided to double major to gain these experiences. But, once you have made your decision then there are a few simple steps to follow to declare a minor or second major.
First I recommend speaking to your academic advisor of your first major. Your academic advisor will be helpful when it comes to letting you know if declaring another major is smart or possible. This all depends on when you make your decision to declare another major. Typically, the sooner the better, but even if it’s too late for you to declare a second major while still being able to graduate on time then your advisor may recommend a minor instead.
I was able to declare a second major halfway through my first semester at Arcadia. Coming into college already knowing that I wanted to double major, it allowed my process to be much easier and effective. As of now, I believe double majoring is a very smart idea. I have been able to make multiple connections within both departments and formed meaningful relationships.
After speaking with your advisor next I recommend meeting and speaking to the chair of the department you wish to double major in. By doing this you’ll be able to learn and understand how you can meet the needs for that particular major. Then, once you have talked with both departments you’ll fill out this form. After filling out this form, the Division of Student Success will contact you letting you know if you’ve been accepted or denied. After this process is complete you’ll be given a second advisor for your new major.
In my personal experience, by being able to add Criminal Justice as a second major of mine before my first semester of college was even over I was able to gain a wide variety of experiences. My academic advisor was extremely helpful on my journey and I strongly believe that declaring a second major or minor is very doable in your college journey.
