Makiyah’s Top Ten Items to Bring with You As You “Preview the World”
When it comes to packing, making sure you have everything you may need is extremely stressful. We all face the feeling of forgetting something, wondering if we need to pack more, or if you’re like me, less. However, with my experience of currently being in a Preview the World class going Scotland, and after having a few more experiences with traveling far away, I’ve been able to create a list of travel essentials. These essentials will allow you to relax when it comes to packing, and as long as you remember these 10 items your trip should be a breeze.
- Your Passport
Your passport is critical when traveling abroad. Without your passport, you will not even be let onto the plane to begin traveling to your beautiful destination. So, make sure your passport is up to date and ready to use at the airport.
- Travel Adapter/Charging Cords
It’s crucial to bring a charger adapter with you. Many places around the world actually use different types of outlets than the U.S. For example, Scotland uses a type G plug while the U.S. uses type A and type B plugs. This means our chargers will not be able to plug into the wall in Scotland so an adapter is mandatory.
- Clothes Appropriate to Your Destination’s Weather Conditions
Many places experience different types of weather and temperatures at different times. Because of this, it’s extremely important to research the place you will be traveling to and pack clothes that will allow you to be comfortable in their weather conditions. Scotland’s weather is very chilly and it rains quite often. So, I will be making sure to bring my rain boots, rain jacket and an umbrella.
- Credit Card or Cash in the Country’s Currency
Before traveling to another country it’s very important to look into their currency so you know how much U.S. dollars are worth in certain places. If using your credit card, it’s also important to look into your bank and see if any fees will occur when using it out of the country. In Scotland they use the British pound and 1 pound equals about 1.24 US dollars. To exchange US currency for British pounds you would need to go to your bank and they will make this change for you.
- Cell Phone
It’s pretty obvious that we would bring your cell phones or any device that can be easily transported. But you should first begin by contacting your phone service provider and see if fees will occur. Many times fees will occur unless you have a specific plan. So, you may want to get a higher plan for the month you’re traveling to avoid these fees.
- Medication
While on Preview, we will be in another country for about a week. Since we will be gone for a while it’s important to remember to bring all your required medication. This can help prevent any health issues from occurring when on your trip.
- Reusable Water Bottle
It can be extremely helpful to bring a water bottle with you. This can be helpful on the plane, but also while you’re abroad. This can also save you a large amount of money if you don’t have to constantly spend money on plastic water bottles. The type of water bottle I will be bringing with me is my Stanley cup but I will be taking out the straw so that my cup is able to close. You could also bring a Yeti. I do recommend bringing a water bottle that is able to close.
- Walking Shoes
While on Preview many of the activities involve being outside and you’ll most likely be spending several hours on your feet, so it’s a good idea to bring shoes you know you can wear for long periods of time.
- Toiletries
It’s very important to pack any toiletries you may use. This includes a toothbrush and toothpaste, lotion, soap, face wash, etc. It’s helpful to have these things to prevent having to purchase them when on your trip.
- Headphones
Lastly, don’t forget to bring your headphones. Headphones are convenient when you’re in any loud environment, especially at the airport. When traveling for Preview we’re all going to experience very long flights so having headphones will make these flights a lot more comfortable and relaxing.
