Embracing My Creative Side With Quiddity
I’ve been working with Quiddity, Arcadia’s online literary magazine, for a couple of years now, and I’ve got to say that I truly enjoy doing so. Quiddity is Arcadia’s gateway to the creative writing community. We publish digitally twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
I never know what type of story or poem we’ll receive, but it’s always fun to see where each one ends up. Quiddity welcomes all forms of writing and encourages submissions that are unfiltered and free of limitations. That includes works from all majors. Powerful poems such as “The Gray” comment on society and the vicious cycles of history, while poems like “You In Other Words” dig deep into romantically poetic descriptions and finish with raw examples of love.
There are no limitations on the kind of writing we publish: We want the rawest form of each writer. Our literary magazine includes creative pieces that are true to themselves, original, and unapologetic.

There are no limitations on the kind of writing we publish: We want the rawest form of each writer. Our literary magazine includes creative pieces that are true to themselves, original, and unapologetic. Whether your work gets published or not, you will know where it stands and you will be introduced to the publishing process. We review every submission fairly and offer feedback that will make your work stronger. Your writing improves, regardless.
If your work is published, you’ll be given a chance to read it at Quiddity’s biannual launch party. It is a joyous, term-ending experience for the author and listeners. I speak from the experience of working as a script reader here and being a “published” poet. Submitting serves as your first steps into professional creative writing—in addition to being a fine resume booster.
Quiddity also offers opportunities beyond writing. While googling an image is an option for your posts, it is far more interesting to pair fresh and original writings with fresh and original art. The works of Arcadia art majors fit amazingly well with published work, and sometimes end up on our covers. We’ve even held a contest based around works of art. You’d be surprised to see all of the types of stories and poems a single picture can produce. I would love to eventually see the reverse—artwork inspired by our published writing.
But you may not even know you have a story in you. Our write-in tables promote the magazine and draw in students walking by to take a break between assignments and just write what they feel. We set up write-ins at Easton Cafe. There, we promote the magazine and offer activities that encourage and strengthen creative writing. You can also sign up to join the Quiddity mailing list while you’re there, and learn more about writing contests. Contest topics, which can range from social justice to the seasons and holidays, change every term. The magazine is also a proud promoter of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and leads free workshops to help writers get started.
Have an idea for a story or a poem and not sure what to do with it? An art submission that you’re proud? Send in your best work (and show off your talent) to pieczkolond@arcadia.edu.
Look forward to reading your submissions!
