What is Urinetown?
Urinetown the Musical is my favorite show that I have done to date. Performed here on campus November 14-17, Urinetown is a funny self-aware musical that makes fun of bad musicals and breaks the fourth wall tastefully. It is fully aware of its absurdity while simultaneously poking jabs at not only the field of theatre but at society as a whole. Urinetown deals with a town that has been in a 20-year-long drought, where people have to pay to use the restroom, and if they fail to pay or break the law by peeing without paying they will be sent to the rumored, feared, but never seen, “Urinetown”.
In Urinetown, I played Soupy Sue, a member of the ensemble and one of the poor who is fighting against Cladwell and the rich, along with a few other assorted ensemble numbers. This show was a marathon but truly such an enjoyable experience, as I was honored with the opportunity to work with some of my roommates and closest friends. I’ve never been a part of such a close-knit cast before, many of us are roommates or close friends with one another, and we only got closer through this show. All the new students in the show have now become my close friends and I still see them on an almost daily basis. I’ve never felt more comfortable on stage before than I have in this production. I used to be incredibly intimidated by performing, but the comedic caricature nature of this show along with my own personal growth, and my personal relationship to everyone in the cast and crew made it such a comfortable, fun, and exciting environment for me. This show is truly impressive, both in its size and difficulty vocally. To up everything a level further the amazing production team designed and executed a revolve onstage, where the whole set spins to reveal different locations, which was an unbelievable sight to see.
I strongly recommend investigating this show further if you are interested, and looking into future Arcadia Theatre Productions!
